Fortune & Folly - Birch Book [Helmet Room Recordings - 2006]Fortune & Folly has such a wonderfully sunshine on your face, sand between you toes folk vibe to it, first light steam in on a summers day. It seems from another time, hazed by 60’s feel of free love and peace for everyone, simply put it makes you feel good about the world, but never seems contrived or forced. The whole album travel by in such a laid back manner, like a cool drink on a hot day or a just warm drink on a cold day. With drowsy from the hills- world wise vocals hovered over tranquil melodic guitar pickings. It just make you want to easy back into your seat with a big smile on your face. It brings back memories of autumn leaf fall when you where 8 or 9, the die sunshine on open water surrounded by tall every green forest, the warmth of a open fire on a frosty November dusk. The musical backing is kept simple just strummed acoustic, the odd fleck of harmonica, some times muilt layered vocals, and the odd twist of electric guitar, A few bassy hits or emotional flourishers of piano - but none of this every takes away from its free as the breeze air. A very heart warming folk record, that never tries to be too clever or out there- just honest from the heart soul soothing music. A real treat for your body and soul. Roger Batty
