Wold - Screech Owl [Profound Lore Records - 2007]Wold are a fiery mix of electro noise and black metal elements. Sledgehammer murky rhythmic pounding and electronic overloads go against overloaded demonic vocals distorted almost beyond recognition & grand and evil black guitar elements and dark harmonics try to make them selfs heard. For the first two tracks you'll wonder what the hell you've been dropped into, as the sound is mangled and corrupted to such a level it’s diffcult to make out one element from another, it just tears into the side of your head like a nail storm of demonic noise. By track three things seem relatively calmer, as there's a constant odd rhythmic skin bashing, rapid vocals and a buzzing chainsaw like riff that you can just about make out its primal evil intent, before ending on some almost tuneful/noisy overload. Then we jump into distorted heavily choir harmonics of Nervosa, with locked marching beat and slower more menacing and pained growls, that have an odd dark psychedelic echo and twist added to them. The rest of the album goes from one chaotic/bloody sound pile up to another, but there's a melodic dark heart beating under all the pain and suffering, that sometime appears in a corrupted and abused form near the surface. A very grim, painful and dangerous ride into black metal noise hell, that will only attracted who already enjoy some noise and have a interesting in been in the ring with the grim offspring of a noise/black metal cross breed. One of the most distorted, corrupted and downright nasty sounding black metal albums you’re likely to come across. To find out more and buy direct fall in to this hell. Roger Batty
