Dave Smolen - Malleable Laminates [Sprout - 2007]With Malleable Laminates Dave Smolen builds a sew-sawing soured and eerier musical/sound landscape. Coming off somewhere between improvised, electronicai and noise. Though out it's twenty minute running time it moves from one vivid musical sound picture to another. Buiding, twisting and bellowing of screeching electro pluses, shifting of guitar like static clouds, or making off in the distance murky percussion waves. But it never gets too crowded or noisy, each sound is allowed to stand out proud and shivering in the audio cold. Showing that Smolen has a great talent for sound dynamics and feel, been able to create a haphazard and broken audio world that is very much his own.Cleverly treading between eerier, alien and involving. It all comes packed in a micro budget folded cardboard cover- with rudimentary black print, which though hardly sophisticated does seem to fit enclosed material.
