Birchville Cat Motel/Opaque - Split [Kovorox Sound - 2007]This great split offers up two noisy mainly guitar based sound sculptures/tortures with eerier and sinister undertones. bring together the talents of prolific New Zealand noise/drone maker Birchville Cat Motel and Uk ten year old guitar noise project opaque. First up we have Birchville Cat Motel track Let Comets land were they will, which starts off with brief ringing sinister tone before crashing into a seething and fierce landscape of jagged and painful guitar tones. But with a wonderful creepy drone undercurrent present, that slowly unfolds it’s self like a chilling harmonic fog. The track Aptly managing to balances sounding eerier, atmospheric and face burn brutal at the same time. It keeps your attention focused though out the tracks boiling and sinister 20 minute unfold. Next is the opaque track Their voices were incoherent smears, which starts off with slow moving sinister guitar droning clouds, that really have a great feel of menace about them. As the track progresses you can really feel the tension building as more layers and power of sound are added. By the five minute mark the guitar tone comes in more caustic and noisy, building and building on it’s self great noisy intensity and power and a sound boiling finale. A very rewarding split were both the tracks complement each other nicely, to hear samples and buy direct go here. Roger Batty
