Parry/søegaard - Off the Map [Hwyl - 2007]Off the map finds Hwyl Nofio Main man Steve Parry and one of his co sound conspirators in Hwyl Nofio Fredrik søegaard creating an album of disorientating, melting, noisy and alien sinster guitar based sound worlds. That go from been bizarrely meditife, discordantly beautiful to down right wrong sounding and reality bending. It’s clear to see why the pair decided to not put it under the Hwyl Nofio banner, sure there are murmurs of Hwyl Nofio mix of nightmare soundworlds, improvised and dread filled tones here, but this feels more stripped down, awkward and really just very strange. Like music made on a sinister black and red alien world, where creatures play each others bodies- stretching and plucking sinew and veins, rubbing and crawling weird voices boxes. The album starts off relatively sane and oddly medditife with slight discordant traces, but as it goes on it seems to become more soured, bent and wrong sounding like your door of perception have finally melted away and around you see this strange other world bobbing, float and streaming by . Really some of the intricate and bizarre sounds they bend and pull from there instrumentals will surprise even the more jaded and well heard sound explorers. And as the album slide to a stop nearly an hour later, you’ll truly wonder were the hell you head has been. Yet another clever invetive and mind/mood altering strange and sinister sound ride from the insanely talented Steve Parry. Of interest to anyone who enjoys odd different and eerier soundcaft, in either noise, ambeint or improvised base. To find out more and buy direct go to here. Roger Batty
