Scott Tinkler - Backwards [Extreme - 2007]Scott Tinkler is one of Australia's finest and most respected trumpet players- winner of numerous awards and accolades for his main incarnations as ensemble player. Backwards finds him step out of his usual collaborative and safer state into an improvised solo album. Recorded in one day, mixed in one day. It present a varied textural and paced collection of improvised pieces. With Tinkler playing against him self, feeding his trumpet though effects peddles, playing though water, adding in improvised percussive detail and other sound matter traces. But primarily this is about Tinklers talented trumpet playing with all the tracks been exciting and effective improvised pieces that never get too bogged down with sound play and just making weird sounds for the sake of it. In all the disk last on near an hour with tracks ranging from three to eight minutes a piece, Tinkler develops and plays with ideas than lets them go, the tracks never out staying there welcome. The mood going from atmospheric to angler to playful, but always rewarding. A fine snapshot of a very talented musician, which remains entertaining and worthwhile throughout its playing time.
