Otomo Yoshihide - Multiple Otomo- CD/DVD [Asphodel - 2007]

Multiple Otomo brings together a treasure trove audio/visual noise and beautiful Chaos from this prolific turntablist, guitarist and what-ever-he-fancies Japanese noisemaker, improviser and sound sculptor.

This  2 disk set comes in a nice  DVD sized digi-pak covered with stills from the DVD. The first disk in the set is  of just over an hour audio disk that goes from streached out electro crackle and settle, to jagged and abused turntable sound art, screeching and whining noise matter, feedback clouds of guitar, to more  drawn out subtle and ghostly chime like tones, eerier lo-noise ambient drift and crackle, Junkyard beat craft and whistle.  I’ll have to say I found the more subtle moments that come in the second half of the disk  more rewarding and enjoyable, though the turntable tracks were interesting they often didn’t have enough going for them to warrant closing playing and  investigation.

The second disc is an hour of visuals of Otomo's playing and abusing of mainly his turntable with the odd guitar track to. The tracks visual are very nicely and cleverly put together- like watching a transmission from another world or reality as Otomo levels all manner of terror and destruction, but in the process produces some fine audio art and noise. He melts, breaks and genral abuse vinyl, uses the turntable in all manner of creative and bizarre ways,  from put saw blades on them, stretching springs and clumps over the playing heads and genral creative destruction and  abuse – all I can say is he must get through a hell of a lot of record decks.

A really submersion in the distinctive and chaotic world Of Otomo Yoshihide with both disk worth your time, though I’d say the DVD is the most rewarding and captivating of the two.
