William Basinski - El Camino Real [2062 - 2007]El Camino Real presents another long form tape reel composition from one of the masters of stuck and slowly morphing sonic beauty William Basinski, in an edition of 300. As he has done in the past he takes a few moments of melodic string work -then loops, decays and manipulates it in a very organic & ageing manner, as if its changed naturally before ones ears like the shifting of the season and the changing of the tides. This time it’s a 50 minute long track, that recycles and loops string swoon & bass wondering undercurrent. Though it’s pleasant enough he sadly seems to do little with the loop, it’s development or decay, were in the past his sonic skills seemed to suck you in deeper and deeper to the circling composition- this time around it left me feel rather uninspired and flat. Sure there are slow changes and subtle sonic movements, but sadly not enough to keep ones attention for near on an hour. Maybe it’s the loop it’s self, or maybe he was just having an off day, while this it's nice enough audio background painting- to closely listen to it, it gets more than a little tiresome. Roger Batty
