Blanketship & The Dollson Family Singers - Music with A Message [Gigante Sound - 2007]The rather wonderful & cool Gigante Sound label brings us another charming, whacky and memorable shot of junk shop record sampling, meets eclectronica meets what every they fancy with Music with a message. I think the thing that makes Blanket Ship & Dollson family singers(aka Jared Blüm) and all the other stuff released thus far on the label stand out from the piles of other sampled based and plundertronics stuff around is they know how to build fully realized songs and atmospheres. Lets face it any idiot can collect together a bunch of old, weird and cheeky samples and throw them together, but to compose with them in a enjoyable and clever whole & then mix in real played instrumental elements and beats takes real talent. Music with a message is a bit more tongue-in-cheek, playful and fun than the other two often disorientating and strange releasers I’ve heard from the label. I can hear nods towards When’s more later day sun-shinny psychedelic pop sampling here, but this has it’s own charms and wonders. Mixed in here are all manner of musical, vocal and otherwise samples going from bad, weird & kids 60’s & 70’s pop, funk grooves, jazz highs, film music, soul samples, waltz music ect- which Blüm bends, melts shapes and morphs into wonderful addictive beat worlds and cheese feast of the highest order. For the albums full 50 minute running time it keeps you humming, amused and puzzled. 07 has been a great year for this fledgling label, cant wait to see what 08 holds!. Roger Batty
