Dead Beat Project - Breaking the Shell [Aesthetic Death Records - 2007]Dead Beat Project is the an enjoyable if not particularly original beats, synth and atmosphere solo outing from Oliver Goyet keyboard player of UK doom band Esoteric. Things run in a fairly clichéd and predictable manner through out, beats raise when you expect them to & often sound rather dated examples of electronica & almost techno like clichés. Synth's hover and simmer with dark cinmatics and mysterious spoken word elements float here and there high with gothic/techno campness. But through it all I can’t help but really enjoying this very much – Goyet has a great ear for eerier and dramatic tune craft, each of the nine tracks here builds tension and release very nicely sucking you deep into there atmospheric waters. There are also touches of guitar elements, string like sounds, synthetic choir raise. I guess comparisons would be coil(at their more commercial) Ulver, In the Nursery, more modern Tangerine Dream & synth based and beat soundtrack work from around the mid 90’s. An effective and oddly addictive hit of beats ‘n’ atmosphere, you’ve just got ignore the clichéd elements and let yourself fall under Dead Beat Project’s magic. Roger Batty
