Pomassl - Spare Parts [Raster-Noton - 2007]Spare Parts electronica surreal sound world mangers to sound both alien, atmospheric, memorable and bizarrely rhythmic. The whole album is tied nice and tight with the tracks getting their point and strange vibe across, but never out staying or stretching the point- giving the album the feeling of a trip through a strange shifting technology advance house of many weird rooms. It’s the pure invention and texture of sound that’s most impressive & it’s always on the move even with-in tracks; odd dragging, muffled textures slide under eerier electro funk patterns to suddenly slip away leavening the bass standing alone, or tight sinister cut stabs of melodies jolt in and out of focus before disappearing down into ear smarting dissension tone surrounded by micro tones. This album keeps you on your toes through out, the tone is edgy, sometime suffocation, sometimes eerier but always rewarding. I guess an electronica album that breaths a similar air and atmosphere is Autechre's Confield -this seem to mess with you perceptions and reality of sound and it’s placing in the same way, but with touches knife edge cinematic and fearful undecurrents as well, but really I’m just fishing as this very much has it’s own atmosphere and tone A high level electronic brain fry & another great recent release from Raster-Noton who seemed to have lost their way for a while, but are know squarely back as a label you must take notice of.
