Qulfus - Enos [Gigante sound - 2008]Enos is the first new release in a bit from the San- Francisco label/ artist collective gigante sound who mix together sampled and experimental elements in an original and refreshing manner, but I’ll have to say I’m rather underwellemed by Enos. Qulfus seems is more a straight forward sampling/ Dj concern than the rest of the labels output, here most of the tracks seem to based around old foreign pop songs, smoky funk tracks and thrift shop records. Each track more often than not will just focus on moving and morphing one sampled record- so it feels a little safe and pedestrian. I can see what their trying to do here, build more from a simpler base and try and give the tracks more of a ‘song’ feeling in the traditional sense, but the tracks offten feel dull and even borring. Latter tracks made my ears prick up a bit with their mix funky, sinister and comic organ runs over jamed-out elements and quirky percussions. Or really slurred, loose and noisy sampling. But for most of the time it just feels too safe, playing it careful & where’s all the fun gone?. I really wanted to like this as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed everything else this label has put thus far, lets hope this is just a blip and they get back on the good crazy and demented stuff again very soon.
