APM - Sprint Mill [IRC Distribution - 2008]Sprint Mill is a triple collaboration between three sound/ drone uk based artists Colin Potter, Phil Mouldycliff and Chris Atkins. With all the sounds here been derived from in and around an old mill in the lake district which is now used by artist Edward Acland as workshop. The trio build a collection of droning, wiring and machine purring textural rich tracks from the surroundings, interweaved with brief texts from Acland himself talking about materials his users for his work and general if a little cryptic chatter- he has a very relaxing uk university lectures voice which makes a nice contrast to the often old machinery and quite noisy based sound tapestry. But this never becomes all out noise or in the least bit threatening or violent- it’s often restful and strangle warming trip back to a fading past of old machinery tones that’s often under drawn by harmonic drone textures. The tracks go from quite hectic rushing yet comforting tone of the saw or machinery that’s often arranged in a rhythmic or sonic pattener manner, to slow idling and rich rickety tones, all the way to strange alien, dense and textural rich sound hovers. The trio taking in and making highly rewarding sonic and often semi-harmonic or rhythmic canvas from the sound of the machinery, the space it’s self, running water from out side and of course Acland voice. The trio really have creating a fascinating and often warming sometimes alien world from this space. Roger Batty
