Coh & Cosey Fanni Tutti - Coh Plays Cosey [Raster Noton - 2008]This does exactly as the title suggests- it finds electronics and sample wiz Coh Aka Ivan Pavlov taking the voice /singing tones of Cosey Fanni Tutti and cutting, reshuffling and layering them up into rhythmic, atmospheric and musically form. Cosey Fanni Tutti voice has clearly been recorded in every possible emotional situation and tone range, so Pavlov literally users her voice as a sonic pallet to pick ‘n’ mix different tones, intentions, whispers and mouth/voice box textures. At times her voice will be layered up into stuck bouncing and jittering mass around you that sounds both alien, strange and a little scary, yet appealing. At other times he users her voice almost as a bizarre organic synth like tone to build throbbing electroinca patterns/ banks of harmonic sound & also make beat and percussive matter out of. He’ll stretch and pull out her voice tones into ambient yet slightly glichty sonic land scapes that pan out around you or concentrate on just a few words or phrases to build strange/ woozy shapes and archers from her voice. Or on one track he users untreated descriptive texts with her voices tones users as ambient and atmospheric blocks of sound in the background. Really a fascinating and very clever collabration between the pair which must have taken agers to record her different tones and then for Pavlov to manipulate, sculpture and build intriguing tracks out of. A surprisingly varied album when you think that just voice tone is used it goes from; sensual, ambient and alien, to harmonic, quirky and rhythmic bound, to jittery, hectic, rather bizarre and at time noisy. Something a little bit different from Povlov, Fanni Tutti and Raster Noton it’s self. An interesting experiment and idea that’s executed with great sonic talent, atmosphere and at times fun Roger Batty
