Sub-id - Bff [1320 Records - 2008]Bff is a day glow often dense mix of electroinca, hip-hop beats, disco, funk and jazz with the album starting off quite hectic and all over the place with beats, funky bass lines, synth, smoky sax and all manner cut up samples come at you from all angles, but later on it gets a bit more atmospheric and a bit more laid-back. Really a large part of the album is a little bit too hectic for it’s own good and at times it feels like there almost like two or three tracks been played at the same time- when they do manage to thin out the mix there are some effective grooves, textures and elements- Like icy synth unwinds over funky bass line grooves, glittering disco electro throbs over running into Boards of Canada like upbeat drifts, hazy sax drifts over up-frount electro beats and handclaps- but you often really have to pick through the dense sound make up to find these moments. It’s only around the last few tracks that they seem to focus more on staying in one place for a longer time and building atmospherics, groove, melody and wholly consistent tracks. A vibrate and dense debut album that sadly is let down too often by trying to fit too many layers and elements together, though there are some great moments here they just need to focus more on one vibe at a time and not try to be too clever.
