Coffins - Buried Death [20 Buck Spin - 2008]I first became aware of the excellent Tokyo based project coffins and their mean ‘n’ nasty horror obsessed mix of death and doom metal sound last year with their split The Arm & Sword of a Bastard God. Buried Death sees them offer up eight highly effective & heavy as a cart of dead bodies slices of death/doom craft. The thing that hits you straight between the eyes from the start of Buried Death is the great crushing guitar and bass tone they’ve managed to come up with- it feels like several deep and slowly purring chainsaws slowly digging into your head- chugging, stumbling and destroying. Added to this we have bone shaking drums, great guttural death metal grunts and a great atmospheric/ horror bound atmosphere. The tracks go from slowed zombie chugging stagers, to brutal mid-pace attacks up, to groove mettlics and the odd moment of a bit higher 'running from the madman' pace, though things never get too fast or too slow here. Though the tracks are heavy and brutal there still some great memorable riff craft on display- the band clearly knowing how to get the balance of been crushing and addictive, violent yet compelling like a great zombie or horror film. Really a great replayble and meaty death/ doom cross breed of an album that summons up great bone crushing power with memorable and effective song craft. Roger Batty
