The Peeesseye - Mayhem in Mansion, Shivers in the Shack [Evolving Ear - 2007]There’s something very off-kilter, sonically other and odd about Mayhem in Mansion, Shivers in the Shack as it falls in a strange place between avant rock, folk, improv and ambience all topped off with weird often ritual tinged vocalising. The album at first feels only vaguely odd with it’s shimmering guitar strum and throbbing bass opener revival but the deeper you get in the stranger, more demented and unhinged it becomes like it’s slowly but surely melting your brain into its hallucinogenic shape. With it’s dense soup of Guitar elements, layers of strange often scuttling percussion, noise elements, shimmer organ textures and of course the weird vocalising- that go from odd jabbering, chattering, moans and talking in tongues- all of which shudder, swim and melt into each other at strange angles and patterns. Through it’s has a strange bent demeanour through out it’s often very deep with atmospheric, cinematic air- this is soundtrack music for strange booze and acid comedowns at 3 am watching incoherent and odd angled shot B & W exploitation films through half closed eyes. Managing to be both manic, strangely soothing and uneasy often all at the same time. The Peeesseye sound through originating from rock, folk and cinmatics is very unusual and unique, conjuring up an atmosphere and vibe that it’s wholly their own which I cant really compare to anyone else and it’s nicely heighten even more by the bizzaro album artwork and strange texts that litter the digit-pak.
