Défilé Des Ames - Lust 'n' Stone [Ahnstern - 2008]Défilé Des Ames take on folk is heavy with gothic grandeur and lush melancholy air as the acoustic guitars intricate and sombre melodics are often serenaded by cello, French horn and clarinet. Yet it also has it’s more up-beat/ fiery moments too with racing percussion and folk/ rock galloping pace-all making this a very distinct and original sounding album. Lust 'n' Stone is this greek projects debut album on the wonderful Ahnstern label and the album title is very apt as it feels old, ornate and gilted yet often vibrate and atmospheric. The songs through-out are varied and full of surprises and played with great flare and passion. We go from the mournful and lush swoon of Carnal Desire with it’s deep melodic cello, melodica and French horn grander and simmer, to the pounding and twitchy folk/ rock/ classical mix of Lair with wonderful agitated and shrieking violin tones, electric bass and lead singers gothic punk croon. To the galloping neo-folk acoustic strum of My Middle name.. With great recorder, cello and French horn embellishments, To the atmospheric marching tone of Eosforou Fos with it's taunt Spanish guitar meets trip hop beats and rich downcast oboe wonder. Lust 'n' Stone mangers to be creative and consistent through out- offer up a highly enjoyable ride that goes from lush and melancholy up to galloping and atmospheric. Yet another original, unfailing and surprising take on folk from the Ahnstern label. Roger Batty
