Funeralium - Self Titled [Total Rust - 2007]Funeralium are a French four piece who speclizers in rather heady, atmospheric and quite original sounding doom that mixers in elements of darkened rock, and even traces of dark blues and surf elements too. The album takes in six long mainly ten minute plus tracks that go from zombie staggering type pace, to shadowy and atmospheric clear lined guitar dwells, to slow heavy riff chugs. That are all topped off with guttural yet quite emotional singered vocals, which do have a few harmonic and memorable tochers here and there. All the tracks here are rewarding, crushing and highly atmospheric in there own right, with pace and variation been weaved very well into each and every track. A few stand out moments come in form of; the slowed Slayer like prime evil and darked riffing craft of Let People Die which dips effectively in and out a shadow bass crawls and roaring riff chugs. Or Nearly the end with it’s hopeless and barren dark rock riff bareness that’s lined with darked blues and surf picking that really bring to mind Bill Frisell gone to the darkside, all topped with some great amassed guttural chorus that has quite a bleak harmonic edge. A very Satisfying, atmospheric and consistent slice of doom that keeps your attention total glued through out the whole of it’s near on 80 minute running time. Another great release from the Israel based Doom label Total Rust Roger Batty
