Go to the Bumblefoot website  Bumblefoot - 9.11 [Hermit Inc - 2001]

Bumblefoot's previous album, "Uncool", is still one of my favourite albums. The way Ron Thal and his band combined 70's lounge music with metal, hip-hop and thousands of other genres can only be matched by Mr. Bungle's similar themed album "California". I knew I shouldn't expect the same thing from Bumblefoot's latest release, "9.11", which is a bit more serious in tone, but I would really like to hear Uncool part 2 someday.

The album was originally going to be called "Guitars Suck" but, after the tragedies of september 11th, there was no question but to dedicate this CD to the people who gave their lives on that day and donate all the profits from this album to the disaster relief organizations. Something a lot of artists could take an example from. I would be the first in line for a "Ron Thal Rules, damnit!!" t-shirt because of this gesture.

So is "9.11" any good, because if it's not, there wouldn't be a lot of people donating money to the disaster relief organisations, I hear you ask. Well, of course it's good, it's Ron Thal for christ's sake. The album is mostly guitar-orientated, but there are a couple of songs with vocals. I get bored really fast if there's only guitar-wanking on an album, but Ron creates real songs, with a beginning, center and end, and that's what keeps me interested. From the baroque 'n roll on "Guitars Suck" to the angry "Fly In The Batter" to the loungy "R2" and the jumpy "Lost", I enjoy it all.

So even if I like "Uncool" a bit better, this is still a decent album. Ron proves that he's a very skilled guitar player who can also write great songs. I'm really looking forward to what he will release in the future. Now where can I find those "Ron Thal Rules!!" t-shirts, damnit...
