Sum Of R - Self Titled [Utech Records - 2008]Sum of R’s sound sit’s in an heady and atmospheric place between doom metallic’s, guitar drone craft, filmatic post-rock scaping, grim ‘n’ glighty ambience and general atmospheric dwell and unfold The project are a three piece from Sweden and feature the following: Reto Mäder on bass guitar, strings, electronics, piano and sonic effects. Christoph Hess on manipulated turntable and Roger Ziegler on harmonium, effects. The album’s sound shifts from doomed cinematic guitar descends of Our Karma is Broken, to electric guitar music box-ism meets death tolling and scratching grain of Ural Umbo, to the shimmering 50’s sci-fi rise and ebb opening of Basics of Sleep that latter drops into hypnotic stuck choral drone mode. With each of the 10 tracks here been highly atmospheric, consistent and mood setting in there own right. This is the projects first full length & is a good if not yet great opening shot from the project that show’s really depth of sonic understanding and mood setting going on through out many of the tracks on offer here. Really if you enjoy any type of atmopshric gitar based craft this is worth checking-out. Roger Batty
