Splinter vs. Stalin - Eravamo Così Felici [Turgid Animal - 2009]Eravamo Così Felici is the first non cdr release on the Italian Division of Turgid Animal noise label that’s run by Italian noise pervert extraordinaire Nicola Vinciguerra(Fecalove, etc). And it finds a rather satisfying and brutal boiling up of Italian vocals, power electronics, analogue and digital discharged, melted harmonic electronics and more than a few hints of lost and dammed roman Catholicism with the mashed-up mass and pray like chants that hover through the albums violent yet creative unfold. Splinter vs. Stalin are a fairly prolific experimental noise collective who have released coming up to 20 releasers since 03 in cdr, tape and mp3 form- this is the projects first cd release. For this album the project are a three piece that features Nicola Vinciguerra on noise and mixing, with Lorenzo (Thanatologist , Nave , Entropic Degrade Behind Phylogeny) on vocals and Marco noise and field recordings. The album is a concept album that based around the bizarre true life case of Mirko Sartori , a reclusive mad man who lived with the mummified corpse of his 71-year-old mother Anna for three years in a little town Aqui Terme in northern Italy, were he covering their apartment's walls with weird prayers and requests of help. Through out the album has a very dense and uneasy air as ranted or mumbled Italian vocals are mixed with prayers, chants & screams over a shifting interlocking stew of stuck droning and melted synth textures, feed-back rhythmic chugs, static haze clouds & boils, and general weighty and brooding noise matter The four piece really do mange to capture this wonderful sludgy, unwell and religious devotion gone wrong air that fits perfectly the strange and unhinged case of Mirko Sartori. To add to the considerable unhinged and grim air of the album the lyrics are made up of the unedited mad ramblings of Mirko that adored the rooms of the house he share with his mothers mummified corpse. An rewardingly grim and murky release that really puts you inside Mirko Sartori unwell head. To find out more, hear samples and buy direct drop in here. Roger Batty
