Brethren of The free Spirit - The Wolf Also Shall Dwell With The Lamb [Important Records - 2009]Brethren of The free Spirit are the duo of guitarist/composer James Blackshaw and lutenist/composer Jozef van Wissem. The Wolf Also Shall Dwell With The Lamb is the projects second album of sublime, earthy and beautiful collection of folk/ classical stringed tracks that are both hypnotic in the repetition and atmospheric and melodic in there flow. The album offers up four lengthy tracks each nearing the 10 minute mark a picec; with each track the pair introduces a melodic & atmospheric central riff which is full of ageless, naturalistic and often bleak wonder. They circle and repeat the main riffs over the piece length adding in slight shifts in the music sonic grain and pattern as the tracks progress. The tracks seem to suck you deep into there descending or circling patterns of intricate and lovely string detail; there are no great sudden shifts away from the tracks central harmonic and often moody themes, but that’s what make this all so spellbinding and enchanting as your mind is slow but surely hypnotised by the wonderful crystalline, gorgeous and rich joint string plucks and strums of the pair that surrounds you like beautiful gold treads of sonic wonder. A wonderfully timeless, atmospheric, melodic & special collection of joint acoustic guitar and lute tracks by two modern master of both instruments. Of interesting to anyone who enjoys Hypotonic, elegant, earthy melodic music. Roger Batty
