Nate Young - Regression [Ideal Records - 2009]Regression is the new solo album from Wolf eyes founding member Nate Young and it finds him offering up seven tracks of grim and analogue bound Sonics that for the most part stay away from noisy territory and focus more on horrify and bleak mood setting vibe. The feeling one gets more than anything through-out the album is the vibe and tone of late 70’s or early 80’s sleazy and fucked-up horror movies the likes of: Maniac, Nightmares in a Damaged Brain & The Boogeyman (not the 00 version- but the 80’s grim Ulli Lommel Exorcist meets Halloween crossbreed). Mixed with slowed Throbbing Gristle like rhythmic churning and the odd rise to more noise highs;but really this is all about brooding and grim mood setting. Sure Young’s not really tackling anything new or different from what he’s done with Wolf Eyes, his solo work or in collaborations before but for what this is it’s grimly satisfying, nihilistic and bleack in it’s churning grey and ugly synth semi-melodic drones, clunking and ratting lo-grade electronics and general grim painful 80’s neo gone bloody and violent vibe. Of interest of Course to fans of Wolf Eyes more brooding, mordid and slow side as well as fan of lo-grade 70’s & 80’s soundtracks too. Regression very effectively pulls the listener down into a bleak sleazy frame of mind; it doesn’t reinvent the wheel but its damn effective in it’s bleak and brooding atmosphere making. Roger Batty
