Themselves - The FREEhoudini deluxe [Anticon - 2009] | The FREEhoudini deluxe is the first Themselves full length album since their 02’s The No Music & its surrealistic and dense reinventing of rap & Hip- Hop genre. But instead of pushing the envelope further FREEhoudini sees the collective returning to theirs & Anticon's roots to make a more straight-up Rap & Hip-hop record; though it still has more than a few creative and classic Anticon twists. The album was originally offered up as a free download of the first 16 tracks here; but this cd pressing adds on another 4 great tracks. I guess it’s best to call the original 16 tracks Anticon meets the Rap mixtape as most of the tracks have guests rappers that add their own flow to Dose One’s distinctive rapping and there’s also more than a few nods to Rap’s past too. The list of guests really reads like the Anticon all-stars we have: Sole, Buck 65, Pedestrian, Alias, Why?, Aesop Rock, ect. All of the tracks here are energetic and shifting yet never go too far from the rap genres template, yet they never dwell on the Rap’s tired clichés either- this still very much has the collective & labels fresh take on the genre. The extra four tracks added on here are off the fourth coming Themselves album entitled Crownsdowns and seem to show more genre push and mixing going on; yet their still relatively traditional(well compared with The No Music) and fit in nicely with the other tracks on the album. Really FREEhoudini deluxe has a floorless run of 20 great & consistent tracks; which means it’s difficult to pick highlights but a few particular high points come in the form of : Raping4money which sees Dose One & Why?(the man not the band) returning for joint rap tag team of cLOUDDEAD & what a return it is. The track’s backing is built around head nodding beats, deep 70’s bass, looped Hammond organ riff and a twist of wow-ed guitar loop- all topped off with the pairs glorious & heady interlocking flow. 1 for no money features Sole in great old school form over pushing and buzzing synth string throb and stripped beats. Free&Void shows Dose one in mind bending and speedy flow over Jel's tight, grainy and shifting production and beat making- pure genius really. Really the whole album is near perfection from beginning to end. FREEhoudini deluxe really is a breathtaking return to the glory day’s sound that the Anticon label and collective made in the early 00’s; yet their not repeating what they’ve done in the past, this still sound fresh, creative, clever - been old school yet modern edged. Put simply FREEhoudini deluxe is un-missable if you dig any of the classic anticon albums- but act quick as it’s limited and only available at Anticons home base here. Roger Batty
