The Rita - Shark Knifing [SNE - 2009]Shark Knifing is the small, but perfectly formed new release from HNW master & the genres part inventor The Rita( aka Sam Mckinlay). This release offers up a 7 inch inside a wonderful 12 page picture booklet of shark been attacked with knifes, divers & shark related pictures/ drawings; plus a vinyl sticker and two-sided postcard making this one of the more classy looking HNW releases you`ll have come across. First up we have side one which is etched in it`s run out groove with the name “Monica Swinn” ( a Belgium born exploitation actress who was in several of Jess Franco`s soft-core horror movie`s in the 70`s like Female vampire, Exorcism & Women Without Innocence ). The side opens up with a grisly Australian radio report about a women being attacked by a shark; the report is nicely battered & covered in a feedback sheen. Pretty soon this nice thick wall of noise starts up, which has an almost jerking & haywire groove to it- this element is allow to stink in nicely for a few minutes before another sample & fucked-up media recording is added to the mix. This time its old 1970`s nature program music & a narrators voice talking about sharks; again there`s a nice muffled feed back haze engulfing the sample. Pretty soon the jerking harsh wall kicks back in with new vigour in its cruel grooved attack. Side twos run out groove is etched with the name “Pamela Stanford”( A French born exploitation actress who turned up in the likes of 70`s fare such as: Helga the Leather Mistress, Jess Franco`s Blue Rita & enjoyable, yet very chessey French cannibal moive Cannibal Terror). This side jumps straight in with pummelling HNW tone, which is built around rolling noise wall & stab/ ripping noise tone over attacks. It all gives the feeling of an underwater fight with a shark and the twisting & stabbing of the creature. Later on we get some crunching & bass like static tones entering the picec with a nice, sludgy & muffled feedback type groove about them. Both sides are splendid, creative & near perfect examples of Mr Mckinlay brutal sonic talents & being topped off with the great/ classy packaging this is easily one of the highlights of this years noise releases & a high point in the Rita discography. A must have item for HNW fans; but also a great entry point into the genre to see how one of the masters of the form performs. Roger Batty
