Thirteen Fingers - Void [Somnolent Shelter Records - 2008] | ‘Void’ offers up two half an hour slices of extremely loud, completely engulfing and nasty sounding Harsh Wall noise from Portland based project Thirteen Fingers. This is a seriously heavy duty sonic searing & brain cooking in two(not so)easy & violent steps. The first untitled track grows into caustic view with a thick roasting & ear melting wall of impenetrable tone. As the track progresses more layers of roast, sear & violent pummel are added to white hot soup of sound which seems to be burning into your head at a rapid & unforgiving rate. The track feels like your either in a vast oven that just keeps building in strength & heat, or your descend down the slightly melted & cooking steps of hell it’s self & it’s turning, violent & roaring innards. The tracks quite fast moving & constant in it's boiling wall of sound, through there are no great texture or structure changers during the pieces half a hour running time. The only major layer shift here is that around the half way point a more stretched & strained pitch is forced into the mix which sounds like it could well be seared & effect raped vocal element of some form- this appears on & off through the rest of the track. But mainly the track is all about making a very enjoyable yet nasty wall of roasting, seared & white hot noise structure. The second & last untitled is still fairly roast & furnace like in it’s tone attack & thick wall of sound, but this has a more juddering & stalling pulse worming it’s way through the harsh cooking walls of sound . This juddering tone goes from being quite audible & devastating to slight more subdued & semi masked by the main furnace brewing tones. Again there’s no great textural shifting or sonic movement with-in the track through there are some nice shifts & slides with-in the layers of seared tone abuse. A real brain cooking & ear roasting in two parts which sees Thirteen Fingers dragging, ripping & violently pulling you into this white hot void of extreme & unforgiving HNW. Roger Batty
