Alo Girl - Gently Before She Dies [Turgid Animal - 2009]This C30 tape from always rewarding and distinctive Italian HNW act Alo Girl takes its name from 1972 Sergio Martino directed Giallo moive (original titled “ Il tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave” ) which featured Edwige Fenech as the young, beautiful, and self-confident niece of burned out writer & possible killer Luigi Pistilli. The tape features on the cover a still from the movie of Ms Fenech holding a black cat to her naked body. On the first side we find a track called “Penetration” which starts out quite fast, very jittering, tight, thick and multi -level static like in its feel. As the track moves into its third minute the pace seems to slow down and thin out a little bit, as the jittering static gets stretched and spread out in a nice appealing and often quite detailed manner. Though from time to time the speed of the wall seems to suddenly speed up and crowded you in once more. All told it’s a nice slice of dense static bound ‘wall’ making that keeps you easily hooked for it’s just under it's fifteen minute runtime and leaves you wanting more. Over onto side two and this side is taken up by track called “So Naked, So Dead” which comes in at spot on the fourteen minute mark. This ‘wall’ is once more very jitter bound static it it’s feel- through it does have a more droning or drilling back tone present, which really seems to make this side a bit more oppressive and airless in it’s feel. This side also seems to keep to a more steady & mid-pace feel, through there are once more some nice textured patterns shift long the tracks length. So this side is another very rewarding, thick and consistent ‘wall’.
“Gently before she dies” offers up two sides of very rewarding, moorish and un-relenting wall making, which through is maybe not as experimental as some of Alo Girl work- is very worthy of your time if you enjoy static jitter and judder bound thick noise attacks. Roger Batty
