Altar Of Flies - Permanent Cavity [iDEAL Recordings - 2010]“Permanent Cavity” is the first proper cd & unlimited release from Swedish noise ‘n’ brood project Altar Of Flies- who’ve put out over thirty plus releases since they began in 2007. If you can imagine a more controlled, focused and at times almost grimy cinematic Wolf Eyes at their more brooding and ominous then you’ll be close to what to expect on “Permanent Cavity”. Each track here mixes together: brooding ‘n’ nasty bass throbs, jittering and juddering atmospheric noise textures, sudden folks or thunder masses of clunking noise tone and junk metal, throbbing ‘n’ eerier machine like drones, ominous gong ‘n’ sinister steel dwells, and controlled yet volatile electro textures & tones. On offer here are seven relativity short tracks (by noise standards) that mainly fall between the three and six minute mark a piece, with only the last track hitting just over the ten minute mark. The projects all the work of bass player Mattias Gustafsson- so it’s not surprising that the bass tone is the centre to many of the tracks here, but Gustafsson is also a very talented, highly atmospheric mood setter and controlled noise maker- sure the album has it intense and extreme higher noise moments, but Gustafsson always settles things back down to brooding intenseness and edgy sinister-ness. I’ll have to say I was very much taken by “Permanent Cavity” mix of brooding intensity and sudden yet controlled attacks of seared noise matter. So if you dig your noise with more atmospheric and sinister bass groundings this is a must buy album- I very much look forward to hearing what Gustafsson does next. Roger Batty
