Dona Ferentes - Mud Delicacy [Smell the Stench - 2010] The record label Smell the Stench from Australia, graces us with Dona Ferentes Mud Delicacy. Part Noise, part Ambient and a touch experimental is the general category. A curious release from a curious project is what we have. Dona Ferentes seems to base their sounds on reverbed guitars, analog feedback and Noise. A bit of garbled vocals and swirly ambient effects are thrown in also. It starts off promising with the tortured vocals and staticy feedback of “Testadigiaguaro” and then the hypnotic drone of “Stir-Fry”. Unfortunately it does dissolve into an excruciating din of Noise. Not just standard white noise, but nails on a chalk board noise.
Happily, “Spastic Cacophony of the Smoked Fish” (probably the best title of the year so far), erases the induced tinnitus with a churning whirlpool of vibrating pitches and impressions of fear and apprehension. “Sub-hematic Proof Ordalia” also shines, contained by a vortex of haunting, cold and isolated sounds. Is it the best you’ve heard, no, is it the worst, no again; but it has potential. That in itself far outshines the uninspired spots that crop up. Let’s hope the more experimental side of the project outweighs the noisier moments. Viktorya Kaufholz
