Sleep Of Ages - Peplum [Pigdurt Productions - 2011]

Sleep Of Ages is São Paulo, Brazil based project who hammerout & boil up an often energetic mixture of: Harsh noise, Melodic yet seared experimental electronica, blown out electro sounding tracking and HNW dwells. “Peplum” is the projects first release, and it offers up seven very varied and shifting tracks.

As this debut albums title and artwork suggests Sleep Of Ages obsession/ theme is Peplum or Sword-and-Sandal movies. Peplum moves are a genre of Italian-made Historical or Biblical Epics of late 1950’s to mid 1960’s  that featured often Gladiator and muscle bound type heroes.

The seven tracks move from juddering and blown out Sword-and-Sandal movie soundtrack samples meets caustic and flaying HNW of “Conquest”. To the piercing and seared majestic fourth track “The Colossus Of Rhodes” which mixers very sharp high pitched tones with warbling and whistling semi harmonic electro dwells and drilling mid-tone caustic horn piping’s. Or the mighty and battering noise of “Pepla” which mixes juddering bass bound ‘n’ billowing noise with higher pitched fan belt slipping and sword flight like steel gluttering high pitched noise tones. All seven tracks are relatively short by noise standards and run between just over the three and a half minute to the  just over the eight minute mark a picec.

This is certainty one of the more original and distinctive noise début releases in recent memory with both an original sound and concept. Though at times it does become a bit too manic and overloaded for it’s own, and I wish there could have been more prolonged dwells in the harmonic and textured noise elements. But never the less “Peplum” is well worth your time if you after something that’s noisy, yet original- this really is a breath of fresh air in the often stagnant noise scene.
