Bones - Untitled [Slow Death - 2011]Bones is a mysterious digital based HNW project whom I presume are/is from France( Slow Death records are based in France), and this untitled album is the projects first release. And what we have here are four mid-length 'walls' (between 13 to 20 minutes) that move from dense & impenetrable variety towards glitching almost rhythmic atmospheric yet taut texturing. All the tracks here are untitled, and the first untitled track finds Bones locking down into a thick juddering ‘n’ drilling slice of wall making which has a nice hypnotic yet almost drilling tribal semi groove about it. The second track’s ‘wall’ is built around this great juddering ‘n’ deep slicing muffled bass tone that’s over fed by hacking ‘n’ jittering smaller noise tones- the track has this great feeling of sludgy/ muffled continual descent, and for some reason I picture in my mind slow motion & grainy footage of a limbo pole dancer as the limbo pole is lowered closer & closer to the ground. Untitled number three is a very urgent and persistent mixture of electricity pylon drone looping and speed up juddering static loops that a have a trance inducing & semi African tribal vibe about them. And lastly untitled four is this great edgy and atmospheric mixture of glitching, roasting, slow-mo juddering and slowly jumping static tonalities- there’s a real feeling of depth and space with in this ‘wall’ with Bones wonderfully shifting and altering his often quite textural static map in quite a very eerier yet urgent manner. At times it almost, but not quite touches down in semi rhythmic moments- it’s a great end to a very promising début album. So all in all this is a very impressive debut release that takes on the tribal and aficain themes of some of the Slow Death labels other releases, yet Bones has a very distinctive and unequal sound too. With out doubt one of the highlights of Slow Deaths discography thus far. Roger Batty
