Black Piss - Mourning in Reverent Bitterness for the Astral Sum [Jeshimoth Entertainment - 2011]

Here we have Black Piss with their, so far, only release.  Just like early Bathory, Black Piss is choosing to be anonymous and vague.  Although in Bathorys defense at least we knew of one member, the sadly demised Quorthon.  No website, no bio, no nothing; only the entry for the cd exists in Jeshimoth Entertainments website.

From that small kernel of information we can gather that this is a debut release, it was recorded in 2005 yet released by Jeshimoth in 2011 and it contains one long song of ugly blacked primal metal.  My guess is the song is named after the cds title and that it is one song lasting just over 60 minutes.

While that in itself takes a lot of nerve and confidence, the proof we shall see (or hear) is in the pudding.  Let’s start off by saying there are some solid riffs here.  The guitar playing is half decent with a somewhat avant guard playing style.  While the aura Black Piss was aiming for may have been sinister it comes across here as dissonant and introverted, more so than anything dark or evil.

From there things meander, the drumming is fairly primitive.  Bass appears to be non-existent and the vocals are a high pitched scream a la early Mayhem.  Production too is basic to say the very least but then again with Black Metal bands that very well may be intentional.  Let’s just say it is definitely a raw sound.

As mentioned earlier it takes quite a lot of gumption to write and perform a 65 minute song.  Maybe if Black Piss had chosen to record 20 minutes instead it wouldn’t feel so chaotic and plodding.  We can only guess that this is not one of the most rehearsed bands (projects?) ever, yet you almost have to root for them.  The basic sound is there, but the musicality and ability are lacking.  Could it have sounded better with time?  Maybe, but perhaps we will never know.
