Control - Deadly Sins [Malignant Records - 2011]Control is a long running (more than ten years now I think?) and well known American industrial/power electronics project, with releases on Freak Animal, Eibon Records, L.White Records. "Deadly Sins" is a reissue by Malignant Records of a limited-to-50 edition CDr released for a performance at Elektroanschlag Festival, Germany, in 2010. From what I understand this festival is more oriented towards dance floor electronics than industrial, but this mix is not very surprising since it has been institutionalized by labels like Ant-Zen, join-ventures like Catholic Boys In Heavy Leather and similar shows that seem to happen all the time especially in Mitteleuropa. This CD features seven tracks, all lasting about seven minutes and each dedicated to a capital sin. The sounds never derail from classic Control's european style power electronics: very “clean”, planned and powerful synth mangling, dark synth loops, almost unintelligible over-effected screaming vocals, and an overall violent atmosphere. All tracks share a very similar structure. One or two synth loops reiterate and fight for the whole length of the song, holding it together and giving it a menacing, pulsing, marching pace while controlled (ha!) layers of piercing synth sounds and vocals sizzle over the looping mass. It's not my favourite approach to power electronics, but I can't say it's a bad album. It's definitely made by a guy who knows how to use his tools, and the tracks are strong and massive in length and punch. Long story short, it's a good listen! I definitely think it's a worthy addition to any respectable power electronics collection. And if you know this project already, you'll know exactly what to expect.
