MZ.412 - Domine Rex Inferum [Cold Spring Records - 2011] | “Domine Rex Inferum” is the fourth in the series of five reissue of classic MZ.412 albums by Cold Spring Records. This album original appeared back in 2001, and it offers up an sleek more cinematic take on the projects black industrial sound which here mixers together: blacked soundtrack elements, often subtle ritual & occult tinged Industrial elements, dark ambience, dark & noise lined electronica, and subdued/ moody black metal & noise traces. This is one of the most controlled, sleekly atmospheric, and cleverly planed/ though-out of all the Mz.412 albums. Every element, every sample, and every texture seems perfectly placed & executed to create a dark & satanic mood. The album as a whole has a very soundtrack feel both in its textural feel, it’s sonic builds & falls , and the way it’s laid out- for example take the first track on the album “Invok: Satha 412.71” which after a brief creepy yet noisy start drops into a mixture of malevolent and devilish string swoons, brooding satanic industrial ritual elements, and buried vocals- the track could easily be over the opening credits to some sleek & dark movie about rising static forces in the modern world. Then as the album progresses it becomes more brooding & atmospheric with pared down with orchestral swoons, distant creepy sound elements, subtle traces of backwards guttural vocals, and subtle yet highly moody ritual percussive and industrial elements. For the most part the album is relative subdued and atmospheric, but from time there are sudden and noisy/ brutal risers in the albums sonic flow. And this nicely keeps you on edge of your seat, and heightens the brooding moodiness when it once more returns again. So if your after the more moody, cinematic and polished side of this great projects sound this is the album to go for. I can also see this appealing to horror movie soundtrack buffs, and dark movie soundtrack fans in genreal. To sum-up “Domine Rex Inferum” is a darkly perfect & satanic singed ritual which from start to finish effortless mixes dark sound track elements, with subtle industrial, noise & blacked metal elements to create a heady & damn atmospheric sonic journey.
