Orcrist - Fallen [Strumklang - 2010] | Fallen finds us at Orcrist fifth full length release. The Italian black metal band has been churning out demos and full lengths since 1999. Together the three members Grav, Goblin and Mane create black metal somewhat akin to early Bathory. Lyrically the band embraces the themes of death, darkness and isolation. The first impression you get from Orcrist is rawness. You hear it in the production, in their instruments and lyrically. Make no mistake this is raw black metal. Vocals mix it up a bit between a hoarse rasp and clean vocals. Drumming at times is very basic, pretty much your standard, i.e. either a double bass bombast or a mid pace stomp. Their guitar work is where they shine, there are some fantastic guitar riffs, especially on”Fallen” and”Judgment Of The Demon”. While Orcrist seem to specialize in the early 90’s black metal sound, they do add some interesting elements. “Outro/The Return Of Silence Part II” is a great example. Hugin from Uruk-Hai and Hrossharsgrani helps out with the music composition and vocals here. The use of ambient sounds with a creepy spoken word piece lends to a rather sinister atmosphere. “On the Wings Of Night” has a fine use of harsh and clean vocals, and it works very well here, the guitars are memorable (if not heavy on the treble) and the tempo is a little slower-paced than the other songs. “Judgment Of The Demon” also stands out. The music is heavy yet melodic and intricate. As with the other songs you can really hear the Bathory and Celtic Frost (think Morbid Tales) influence.
While those songs stand out, the rest seem more like filler, they are just not as memorable as the others. Then again Orcrist appear to be waving the flag of traditional black metal and after so many previous releases they seem to be quite happy with their sound. Is it good? Yes. Is it something that’s memorable? Well, sort of; if old school black metal is your cup of tea you may be very happy. If you’re looking for something a little more dynamic you may need to look elsewhere. Viktorya Kaufholz
