slMakita - Cleveland Ohio [Housepig - 2010]Looking at the title of this record, at first I couldn't help but think about the brutal and seminal "Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania" LP by Macronympha, but this is a totally different territory. Everything fits together really well and at certain moments remind me a lot of Fluxus composer Walter Marchetti or The Gerogerigegege's weird masterpieces like “Hell Driver” and “Endless Humiliation”.
While it's difficult to recall specific parts of this disorienting work, the aftertaste left in my ears after a few listens was definitely pleasant. The overall intent of the sounds leans towards the experimental, industrial and musique concrete territory, and it's been a while since I last listened to something in this vein. Makita's work does have its noisy moments, but it's light years from the output of his other unit Lockweld. The focus here is definitely not on sheer volume attack. I especially appreciate the simple tape tweaking sounds, that immediately call to mind old industrial records and sixties academic proto-noise composers. I guess it's just a soft spot of mine.
I must say that "Cleveland, Ohio" is a good album: my only real complaint is that, at a little over twenty five minutes in length, this record is too short. I would have gladly listened to more of this material. Nicola Vinciguerra
