Folter - Self Titled [self release - 2011]

Folter is a new Texas based HNW project that specializes in semi moving, brutal & industrial seared harsh walled noise that has some plain harsh noise texturing running through it. The projects all the work of one Zach Guttowsky (Ex. Protists Of Nebula, Glasgow Smile, INFECTED(TX), Permanent Outlet) who seemingly has only been active in the noise scene for the last year or so.

This first untitled release comes in the form of a CDR, and it features five tracks in all which are meant to be themed around the idea of torture. Each track starts off been built around a fairly firm, seared and raging wall of sound, but as the track progresses Guttowsky often adds in all manner of textural whizz, grate and grind, or shifts the main texturally terrain from it’s starting point. Sometimes it works in an very effective atmospheric manner like on track two “Opera Lies”, where he mixers textural static storms with battering ‘n’ ebbing harsh noise pitchers. Or in on other tracks it works in a more tight ‘n’ battering manner making the wall seem more enclosing & malevolent.

On the whole this is an rewarding enough opening shot from this project- the tracks are quite varied, and I really do enjoy the more atmospheric & almost elemental elements that are weaved in here. So if you like your HNW with a bit of mood setting or enclosing Harsh noise texturing elements this is worth a look. It be interesting to hear what Folter can do with a longer slice of wall-making.
