False Flag - Metal Birds [FTAM - 2011]False Flag is one of the numerous projects of American musician/ noise-maker Justin Marc Lloyd, whose also active as Pregnant Spore and head of the Rainbow Bridge label. Supposedly the thematics of this project are based on New World Order politics, but what I hear is crude and intense metal junk noise, sometimes bordering on the harsh noise wall territory. More precisely a couple of tracks resemble minimal harsh noise wall a-la Bachir Gemayel, with their focus shifted from metal junk abuse and feedback to delicate crackling and hissing. The first track "Planning", which I think is the highlight of the E.P., sees junk metal sounds accompanied by what seems like a circuit bent keyboard and humming drones. The 30 seconds long "Hum" blasts at lower volume and feels like a mix of discarded noise recording sessions, hence being the weakest point of the bunch. All the rest is an invigorating up-to-eleven over-saturated distortion feast drenched in a bath of DOD and rust. As you probably have guessed, I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with "Metal Birds": it's good harsh noise, with a minimal and fitting xerox presentation and a clear obsession with specific sounds, which is an always appreciated and necessary element for the sound pornography that is harsh noise. My only suggestion would be to indulge more in exploring the possibilities of compositions in the vein of "Planning". Anyway I'll gladly have another round, thanks! From this review I’ll start to include the opinions of my girlfriend. I'll call it Poppy's Corner. She's completely outside the fantastic world of noise music and obviously couldn't care less about it. Unfortunately for her, often she's forced to listen to horrible noise because of me. So, here's today's Poppy's Corner: Poppy, what do you think about False Flag - Metal Birds 3" CDr? "It's ok." Nicola Vinciguerra
