Small Hours - Untitled [Inactivist Recordings - 2011]This “untitled” CDR offers up two twenty minute slices of taut, tight & restricted walled noise/ textured noise. The Small Hours project is from the Uk & is the work of James Killick(of Love Katy, Carrie & excellent HNW/AHNW label Sweet Solitude). The first of the two untitled track on offer here is the more straight forward & locked down of the pair. It’s built around a very tight ‘n’ constricted mixture of very juddered mid toned noise, skipping higher end bass tones, and flecks of smaller jittering noise. The track nicely puts one in a very edgy yet oddly accelerating mood, and at times it feels like it cant get any tighter but it seemingly does- through I’m not sure this is just an illusion of the ‘wall’ and Killick is just weaving out this wall untouched. Track two starts out a lot more loose & spaced out with a series of crunchy judders 'n' jitters that are spread in almost a Morse code like stop start fashion. Moving towards the one minute forty minute mark, and you think things are starting to firm up to a taut & tighter mesh of juddering ‘n’ skipping texture noise, but Killick keeps pull the 'wall' back for more spaced out Morse code moments. The rest of the track finds the textures nicely vary from taut thicker meshes of tones & more spaced out crunchy jitters/ judders. All told it’s a nicely track that keeps ones attention with it’s subtle shifting and changing textured patterns. So in conclusion two great slices of tight & restricted walled noise/ textured noise, and another very rewarding release from this Uk based project. Roger Batty
