KOSIK/ Matt Borghi - Tiem Parade [ - 2003]There is a lot of great music out there for those who are not contented by what the hype feeds them with (be it mainstream or in the so-called independent niche). Chance served me well and made me encounter Matt Borghi’s music. Borghi comes from Detroit, USA and defines himself as a “multimedia artist and performer”. I don’t know about his other activities, but his music certainly is damn fine. At first, Tiem Parade was meant to be a Matt Borghi solo release. Over the course of the recording, he passed on the music to Michael Kirson-Goldapper, his associate in KOSIK (a project which is said to have been compared to Radiohead, Aphex Twin and Sigur Ros), who had a bit of fun remixing it, adding various elements, basically playing around to add a new dimension to the music. Consequently, Tiem Parade is now credited to KOSIK/ Matt Borghi. Borghi’s instrument of choice on this album is guitar, albeit extremely processed. The result is often a very ambient sound. The drones make for a beautiful, meditative feeling. Sometimes, it’s much easier to indentify the sound source as being an instrument, you hear a bit of string pulling, the beginning of a more “usual” theme. But even then, Borghi manages to retain the languid atmosphere that shines through the whole CD. On some of the tracks, electronics and rhythms are given a much more prominent role. Then, you enter the realms of sumptuous contemplative electronica, not far removed from Aoki Takamasa’s Indigo Rose (review here). I’m very fond of soft, enchanting, contemplative music. Tiem Parade gives me my fair share of it. This is an extremely peaceful and soothing record. Some of the songs seem to perdure for hours, yet when Tiem Parade ends, you think it lasted half the time of its actual length. I’m used to write longer reviews, but sometimes you just have to let the music do the talking. Only available through http://www.mattborghi.com François Monti
