Sleep Of Ages - Soundtracks To The Sickness [Smell The Stench - 2011]“Soundtracks To The Sickness” finds this São Paulo based noise/ HNW project offer up six tracks of dense ‘n’ searing noise texturing mixed with brooding synth dwells 'n' dirges, and dips into atmospheric/experimental texturing. As with all of this projects work this release is once more themed/based around Peplum or Sword-and-Sandal movies. And the track titles here often have quite a quite a Greek mythology learning to them, with such titles as “Journey of The Argonauts’” & “Eyes Of The Medusa upon you”. The six tracks on offer here run from around just under the three minute mark, to just over the thirteen minute mark. All of the tracks here have a tendency to shift from: sinister synth sustains scared with noise forking & atmospheric feed back trails, onto dense noise often ‘wall’ likes dwells, through to seesawing noise & experimental texturing like moody yet frying dwells, and the odd dart into what sounds like thick yet atmospheric guitar ribbed noise simmers. All six tracks certainly live up to the releases title “Soundtracks To The Sickness”, as there’s a soured & violently unwell vibe running through all six tracks on offer here. All told this CDR is another well thought out & put together release from this creative noise project, and it really does kick up a nasty yet atmospheric noise vibe that perfectly fits the vibe of sickness. My only criticism is that a lot of the tracks do sound a little samey, and there are no real dramatic change of pace or texture here, which you do normally get with this projects work. That said I guess when you trying to create a feeling & vibe of sickness / dying you would have to stay fairly fixed to just a selection of set tones & textures. Roger Batty
