Small Hours - Space [Category III Recordings - 2012]“Space” finds Uk walled noise project Small Hours firmly in ANW territory with two slices of moody ‘n’ drifting ambient noise that are themed around the first Ridley Scott Alien movie. The CDR offers up two tracks in all, and both of these fall between the twenty five to twenty minute mark. First up we have the title track which is a hypnotic emersion in distant rocket thrust or spaceship engine purr- the track is built around one long stretch of droning distant rumble ‘n’ roar that has a slight hissing sub tone beneath it. The track does really summon up images of the Nostromo( the main/ huge space craft from the Alien moive) drifting through space on it’s lonely & drifting journey. The last few minutes of the track finds the soundtrack from the Alien movie been utilized underneath the ‘wall’, and theses tie in with the rest of the track as it picks up from the early shots of the Nostromo coming back to life after it gets awaken from it’s deep rumbling space sleep by the supposable SOS from the LV 246 planetoid. Track number two is called “Message” and this starts off with a sample from the end of the original Alien movie, where the character of Ripley is doing her last recording before going into stasis. The ‘wall’ slowly rises over the fading sample, and to beginning with it’s built around a mixture of repetitive static crackle that’s underfed by distant hissing churns of grey static. The 'wall' stays drifting along like that for the first half of this twenty minute track, then at the 10.30 mark a more cold & denser crackle layer is added to the ‘wall’- this hangs around until the 15th minute then the ‘wall’ seems to slow start to drift & fading out. Both tracks here are highly effective slices of ANW, which fit the Alien movie theme perfectly. This is well worth track down if you’re a fan of more subtle & atmospheric noise, and also if you’re a fan of the movie it self- as these track work as a very effective intro & outro to the movie.
