The NIGHT Product - A Thing That Is Nothing [Unlimited Drift Recordings - 2012]The NIGHT Product is a new HNW project from Texas scene veteran Sean E. Matzus(Black Leather Jesus, Last Rape, [untitled], A Week of Kindness, ect). And this two track release is the projects first release, and what we have here is two slices of undistorted wall making that are both textural rewarding & damn creepy. First up we have “A Thing That Is Nothing”, and this comes in just under the five minute mark. The track’s built around an active mass of rumbling, rubbing & tumbling textured noise which Matzus bounds into a close sounding & eerier wall of sound. Weaved in & out of these dense, grey & often menacing tones is this buried creepy texture which shifts from been strange scraping like, to sinister wind billowing like, onto almost muffled whishing like in it’s feel- this 2nd element really adds a stark & damn creepy edge to the track. All told this is a very effective bit of ‘wall-making, and it seems to summon up in my mind images of being stuck inside a dank, dusty & dread filled wooden cabin out in the middle of the countryside in early winter. Secondly we have “A Thing That Is No-thing”, and this comes in at just shy of the five & a quarter minute mark. Once again the tracks built around close sounding textures, and this time it’s a slightly more active & rapid mixture juddering ‘n’ rubbing tones. Underneath these main, & at times quite manic, tones are these distant sort of metal support snapping ‘n’ buffeting in the wind textures. For some reason this track feels a bit more nightmarish & surreal to me, and it conjures up fearful dreamscapes that chart either walking over a slowly snapping suspension bridge that hangs over pure churning darkness, or been chased by something shapeless & snapping down an endless corridor. Both track here are effectively atmospheric, textural rewarding & creepily executed- so a great release. This first release from the project is available for free from Mr Matzus bandcamp page here. I very much look forward to hearing future releases from this project. Roger Batty
