The Sleep Sessions/Rez Epo - Sudden Momentary Episodes Of Being Pulled Into An [Chaosynod - 2010]Poland carefully hides a handful of interesting noise acts, and this tape released by Chaosynod is a split between two of the most prolific of the bunch: The Sleep Sessions and Rez Epo. I have listened to many The Sleep Sessions releases and I must say the five-minutes track included here, called “Obscurantism”, ranks among my favorites. It starts with a very simple and soft ambient drone, abruptly interrupted by violent and crisp bursts of technical harsh noise. The Sleep Sessions' clean noise explosions call to mind classic acts like Sickness or Facialmess, who have a similar approach. The addition of a soft sea of mellow drone is very fitting and effective, and the little islands of racket float perfectly and with ease. Good job!.
Rez Epo's “X'Tyrr Fufoliae” on side B is a bit more relaxing. An annoying piercing high pitch sound gets soon drowned by low frenquency loops and spacey synth. I admit that The Sleep Sessions' side is much more in my chords than this but I can't complain about Rez Epo's track. It's simple, atmospheric and somehow “catchy”. The piece never derails from its psychedelic course and it feels a bit like a chunk of something that could easily go on forever. Both The Sleep Sessions and Rez Epo's music here is pretty clean and clear, which is an uncommon quality in noise these days. Some will like it and some will not, but personally I'd like to see more material with this attention to detail and quality of sound. Being a c10 this split left a bittersweet feeling in my ears, who clearly craved for more. In conclusion thumbs up for both project and a special prize for The Sleep Sessions. Next time make at least a c30 though! Nicola Vinciguerra
