Moloch - Stiller Schrei des Winters [Metallic Media - 2012]“Stiller Schrei des Winters” (translated to Silent cry of the winter) brings together a collection of 19 tracks from slightly experimental 'n' quirky Ukraine based one man ambient Black Metal project Moloch. The compilation offers up 19 tracks in all bringing together a selection of Moloch tracks from various releases from between 2002 & 2012. There’s a fairly amount of variety here with in the ambient black metal to black metal constraints. We go from slow mournful lo-fi piano/ synth fed instrumentals that drift over bleak rain or wind field recordings. Onto suicidal slowed & doomed blacked metal crawls littered with pained vocals, through to mid-paced blacked riff hazes that have mumble or spoken word elements under them, onto gloomily atmospheric synth waltz, through to darkened lo-fi guitar chugs that surrounded by wondering drum & bass elements. Onto bleak & stark instrumental electric guitar tracks that weave slow & grim cinematic paths. For the most part the track lengths are fairly short falling between just over the minute mark to around the five minute mark. One or two tracks go up towards the six/ seven minute length, and one track hits the eleven minute mark. But for the most part the album slips by fairly rapidly with the track lay-out been such you get a nice variation from track to track in pace & track type. All told this is a grimly enjoyable compilation that mangers be varied & rewarding though-out it's whole run time. So if your enjoy slightly off- kilter yet grim ambient black metal this is well worth picking up. Roger Batty
