Ampconstrictor - Magmabuto [Claustrophilia Records - 2012]Ampconstrictor is a Italian HNW/ Harsh noise project, and it’s been active since 2009. Behind the project is Giovanni Torregrossa (ex member of grindcore project Balatonizer & noise/ambient project Keimverbreitung). This release comes in the form of a 3inch cdr, and the release is themed around Japanese Butoh dance. The Butoh dance form typically involves playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics, extreme or absurd environments. It is traditionally performed in white body makeup with slow hyper-controlled motions, and it can happen or without an audience. There is no set style to the dance, and it may be purely conceptual with no movement at all. The CDR features three tracks in all: “Magmabuto 1”, “Magmabuto 2” & “Magmabuto 3”. The first track is the longest of the three tracks at just over the ten & a quarter minute mark. The track starts with a slowly fading in ‘wall’ which is a urgent & edgy mixture of juddering ‘n’ electro knitting tones, which are ebbed by jittering roasting type tonalities. As the track progresses Torregrossa adds in new layer detail such as: juddering fan belt like repetition, skipping static loops, and all manner of textural detail- these elements are added in a fairly progressive manner, and they mostly follow the urgent/ taut pattern of the original ‘wall’- so this is active walled noise rather than Harsh noise with HNW dwells. It’s only towards the end when things hint at breaking down as Torregrossa thins the ‘wall’ down to nothing at the end of the track. “Magmabuto 2” comes in at just shy of the nine minute mark, and this track focuses in on an almost stalling deep ‘n’ grinding tone. This tone shifts from brutal subterranean rip bound drone, onto billowing juddering, through to pummelling ‘n’ jittering dwells that at times feel like they could break down all togeather.
“Magmabuto 3” is the shortest and most simplistic track here. It comes in at spot on the three minute mark. And the ‘wall’ is based around a battered low end roast that has weaved through it thinner & machine like churner tonalities- these elements seemingly slowing then speeding up with in the ‘wall', though I’m not sure if that's just an illusion of the ‘wall’ it’s self. All told this CDR offers up a rewarding selection of brutal HNW with Harsh Noise elements- so if enjoy active walled noise or HNW/ HN mixes this is worth a look. Roger Batty
