Nightmare Castle - At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul [Muzikaal Kabaal - 2012]“At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul” finds this Louisiana based HNW project offering up a dense & impenetrable slice of horror movie themed brutality. This CDR presents the listener with a single slab of walled noise that comes in just over fifty minutes mark. As any self respecting horror fan will know “At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul” is the first film from cult Brazilian horror director José Mojica Marins. This classic slice of low budget horror chills ‘n’ brutality was released back in 1964, and it followed the adventures of Marins alter ego Coffin Joe- undertaker, sadist, and cult horror figure, as he prowls the city in search for a female to bear him a son. The tracks opens with a sample from the start of the movie, where in Spanish an gypsy like crone warns off the viewers from watching the movie in case of death ‘n’ damnation. Then the ‘wall’ rages in after a minute or so, and it’s a suitable lo-fi & boiling mixture of two or three layers of rapidly jittering/ swirling grey static tones. And weaved through this dense black ‘n’ white sonic landscape is this buried mid to high ranged slurred ‘n’ rolling Morse code or 50’s/60’s electronic laboratory like oscillating drone- this element rolls out in a fairly unchanged looped manner over searing & engulfing sea of dense static. The track nicely ends with a few seconds sample of Coffin Joe’s devilish laughter. I must this ‘wall’ is extremely effective in putting one in a great entranced like state, and the lo-fi grey static meets slow-mo oscillating drone really does give one the feeling of creepy ‘n’ lo budget horror or sci-fi of the 50’s/60’s. So to sum-up this another very worthy release from Nightmare Castle- I think it might be my favourite work from this project thus far….so if you’re into horror & HNW this really is a no brainer Roger Batty
