Lord Foul - Killing Raping Burning / The Devils Advocate [Forever Plagued Records - 2010]Lord Foul were a Louisville, Kentucky based band who summoned up a malignant through often little tongue-in-cheek mixture of black metal & death metal- the band were in existence between 1993 & 1994. This 2010 cd brings together the projects only two demo releases 1993’s “Killing, Raping, Burning” & 1994’s “The Devils Advocate”. Behind the project was Roach ( aka James L. Brown of black metal/ noise project Dargar, black metal/ hardcore punk project Harassor, and more recently black metal band Moonking). And he was joined by someone called Mike( who does’nt seem have done anything else) . Roach started his band life in trash/grind core cross over band Son Of Dog( 1992-1995), and formed Lord Foul initially under the name of Rectal Christ, as somewhat of a joke black metal band, but when he changed the name to Lord Foul he decided to take things a little more seriously through there are still humorous traces left in the use of movie samples & lyrically. This release offers up 11 tracks over the two demos, through there’s only a full running time of just over twenty minutes. All the tracks here are fairly short ‘n’ sharp with a running time of between one minute fifteen to just under the two minute forty mark. Most of the tracks start with a horror or violent movie sample, and the thier pace goes from mid-pace to fairly speedy. All the songs are a fairly rewarding, if little indistinguishable, mix of black & death metal, with the odd more punky hardcore edge here & there. Vocal wise it often falls into the more Florida death metal like gruff yet distinguishable vein, through at times it dips into more speech based slowed blacked metal growls. As one would expect the sound here is lo-fi, often clamouring, with the drums quite high in the mix . All told this reissue is an energetic, often tongue-in-cheek blast of early 1990’s US black/ death metal- there’s nothing mould breaking or particular inventive on display here, but if your after punchy ‘n’ quick running times & a necro black/death mix this is well worth a look.
