Burial Ground - Silent Night, Deadly Night [Self release - 2012]

This C46 tape is a HWN tribute to one of the more cheesy & seasonal slashers 1984’s Silent Night, Deadly Night.  The  tape offers up two side long tracks that mix together dialogue & samples from the movie with thick & punishing yet creative walled noise.

The blood red spray painted white labelled tape comes in a front opening all black cassette case. The front of the case features full colour artwork of the poster artwork from the movie, which shows a Santa going down a chimney with an axe. Also inside the case is a pro printed dark green inlay card that features this projects logo along with the Silent Night, Deadly Night title, and a rather dark still from the movie.

The movie it's self was certainly one of the more tongue-in-cheek, through still fairly brutal additions to the 1980’s slasher craze. The films plot followed a young boy who sees his parents murdered by a criminal dressed up as Santa, so when he grows up he dresses up as Santa & starts murdering people.

The first side opens up with three minutes forty worth samples from the film, and these takes in: the movies chirpy annoying theme, and the attack on the boys parents by the nasty Santa. Then the ‘wall’ slams in, and it’s a great mixture of deep billowing/churning noise which is battered by lashing 'n' coarse grains of thinner static tone- the 'wall' really creates the feeling of brutal searing sonic snow with a brooding undercurrent. Around the seven & a half minute mark you can start to hear 80’s synth music floating under the ‘wall’, and then at the 8th minute we have another small thirty second batch of movie samples. Then we’re back into noise again, & this time the ‘wall’s built around a mixture of deep churning ‘n’ crackling noise mass, with some neat cracking & crunching sub tones weaving in & out of the huge boring mass of the track- to me this 'wall' rather brought to mind the slow churn of a vast snow plow cut through a mass of snow.  At  just before the 13th minute mark we stop for another rather creepy sample from the movie with a mixture of the killer taunting a victim & sped-up  cheesy seasonal music. Then  we’re back into ‘wall’ territory at the 14.20 mark, this time the ‘walls’ built around a drilling yet roaming noise bass tone which is surround by a trim of taut jittering static-this is most effective and constricting in it’s feel. Around the 16th minute mark the boring bass element drops out & you left with this taut almost harmonic jittering texture which seems to hoover around you like a mass of drowsy electronic bees.  At the 18th minute we drop out again for another lot of movie samples, and these last until the twenty two minute mark when the track finishers.  To sum this side- I’d say the ‘wall’ elements here are most effective & often creative too, though I did feel that there where a bit too many drops into movie samples for my liking.

Onto side two, and we open up with another sample from the movie- this time it’s a collection of murder scenes & urgent/ wonky 80’s  Christmas horror synth music. The  ‘wall’ comes in at just over the four & a half minute mark, and it’s a mixture of  locked raging/ billowing low-end noise drone, that’s spurted by this semi swirling static noise grain. We break again around just past the 11 minute mark for another kill themed sample, then by just under the 12th minute we’re back into ‘wall’ territory again. This time it’s a mixture of distorting juddering/ churning low end manic meatiness, and jittering crisp static like hazing noise- again this ‘wall’ has quite a seasonal mush ‘n’ grind your head in textural snow type feel to it. At the 19.20 mark we stop for another movie sample, this time it’s some carol samples & the films end sequence which I won’t give away to those who have not seen the movie- the track finishers with this last sample. So thoughts on this side…well again I felt there where a bit too many movie sample  elements, as for the ‘wall’ elements these where ok, though not as effective or creative as the first sides elements- but I did very much like the last ‘wall’ before the end sample.

So to sum up the release- it was a enjoyable HNW tribute to this seasonal slasher film from this  La Crosse, Wisconsin based project. With the first side offering the most rewarding ‘walled’ moments, I just wish the sample elements had just been cut back by a minute or two on both sides.
